The tooth is anchored in the bone through different structures. These structures (gums, root cement, fibres and bones) are known under the generic term of periodontium (periodontal apparatus).

Periodontitis is an inflamatory disease caused by bacteria. In its progress, all elements of the periodontal apparatus are destroyed and therefore gum recessions, tooth loosening and sometimes tooth loss are the consequences.

It always starts with a gum inflammation (gingivitis) and it can transform into periodontitis if not treated. Gingivitis or periodontitis develops in the presence of bacteria that grew to plaque in case of insufficient dental care. If not removed, the plaque causes the formation of tartar that favours the infection’s growth towards the tooth root. As a result, a gap forms, the gingival pocket.

A not treated periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.
